We travel to open our minds and “find ourselves”, Reader. But, sometimes, we end up finding a big, steaming heap of shit instead. Today, we show you destinations you should NOT bother with.
Top 12 Worst Countries to VisitTravelling in the Internet era is usually ALL about the BEST - the best destinations, the best gear, the best this and the best that. And while people love to know the best places to visit worldwide, it's equally important to acknowledge which destinations to avoid. Because the hard truth is: even popular travel destinations can sometimes be a bit shit. And today, we’re stepping right on it 😉 Offender #1: MoroccoMorocco is entry-level North Africa for many budget backpackers seeking a taste of an Aladdin fairy tale. Each year, millions are tempted by promises of abundant hashish, surreal landscapes, and ancient Moor and Berber cities. But what I found in Morocco was relentless, punishing heat, and some of the worst people I have ever encountered in all my travels. In places like Marrakech, as a foreigner, you will not be left alone. Ever. Aggressive and rude shopkeepers, panhandlers, beggars, con artists and drug-pushers will plague you every time you step outside. Offender #2: DubaiI didn’t hate Dubai: I found it interesting to observe the excesses of capitalism gone wild from an outside perspective. Though, I felt like an outsider who couldn’t get below the surface of the city – because it felt like it didn’t go any deeper. Even though some cities in Europe are awful, Dubai takes the cake. A playground where the rich try to outdo each other by building a new fuck-off skyscraper, diamond-encrusted Rolex, or gas-guzzling vehicle. All at the expense of the environment and immigrants filled with false hope. Finding a place to stay that isn’t full of Instagram famous ‘models’ or costs a small fortune is another reason why Dubai sucks. And the list goes on with another 10 lovely destinations you should probably not bother with 😉
And a final disclaimer :)This selection was put together by The Broke Backpacker team, including present and past contributors, and is based on our personal experiences. We're aware that liking or disliking a destination can often be highly subjective. Sometimes, you're just there at the wrong time, or your budget can't cope with how expensive the place is. You could also feel lonely and isolated when solo travelling somewhere and that ends up affecting how you feel about it. Throw in the weather, personal expectations, and how you're feeling in your own little mind, and there's plenty to turn a beautiful place into a horrible destination. So go out and explore the world (both the beautiful and the ugly places). And live to tell the stories. No matter what others say (us included). Travel far. Spend less. Live more. |

The euphoric moments. The tantalising sensations. The rocking of dorm beds… Ahh, yes, Reader. Today, I’ve landed in your inbox to explore the weird and wonderful world that is… hostel sex! Click the red button below to get it on. 👉 Sex in Hostels:Backpacking Storiesand the Lessons They Teach Yeehaw! Many backpackers, whether by choice or by chance, have partaken in or witnessed the act in action. It is an enduring part of the hostel experience. But, is it really okay to get frisky in a room...
Van life is (arguably) the best kind of life. Plenty of our Broke Backpacker folk have either travelled (or full-blown) lived in a campervan at some point in their lives. For many of us, it is the superior way to travel. You carry everything with you, sleep wherever (or, well, mostly), and get to travel slow and still wake up in a new place everyday if you so desire. Dani, our resident Kiwi, has just come back from yet another van adventure, so we'll be passing the mic to her for another...
Tucked away in the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is home to superb natural beauty and a very unique history. Most people who visit this island come for the TT, a wild (and very famous) motorcycle race which happens every year, but my guess is that not a lot of those people think it's possible to walk around the whole place. The Raad ny Foillan (or the ‘Way of the Gull’) is the true main event for us. An epic 100-mile coastal path that circles the entire island. One of the most underrated...
