The backpacker mistakes hall of fame

We've all done some stupid things on the road.

Things like packing half our wardrobe for a two-week trip, trusting a guy who promised us a “special price”, or turning up at a border without properly checking the visa requirements...

Some mistakes are funny in hindsight, others might cost you money, waste half a day, or leave you questioning your life choices.

Today, we're running over some classics that are worth avoiding.

1. Packing Too Much

An outfit for every occasion is RARELY needed. Then you end up lugging around an extra 10kg of stuff you barely touch.

Pack less. Your back will thank you.

2. Ignoring Local Scams

That friendly stranger offering to help, the taxi driver who “forgot” to turn on the meter, the tour that's somehow half the price of every other one...

I'm a big believer of trusting in good, and I know not everyone is trying to scam you, but knowing the common tricks before you arrive can save you a fair bit of money and hassle.

3. Forgetting to Check Visas

Nothing quite kills the excitement of an overland adventure like discovering you need a visa you haven't arranged.

In places like Southeast Asia, border crossings can get confusing and overwhelming. We just dropped a new article all about it to help you plan!

We've rounded up 10 backpacker mistakes you really don't want to make yourself. Some are easy to avoid, others you'll probably learn the hard way.

PS - we're putting the pieces together on the survey we sent out earlier this month, we'll be reaching out to everyone who participated soon :)

The Japanese Alps nearly broke Taya. Planning the bloody thing, mostly: figuring out where to go, how to get there, which mountain range to pick, and where the hell she was supposed to sleep... But in the end, it was all worth it. FIND OUT:HOW TO HIKE THE JAPANESE ALPS! Taya ended up hiking around Kamikochi, one of the most spectacular parts of the Japanese Alps, with plenty of easier walks around the valley and much wilder trails further up. Planning a trip here isn't exactly...
