Every year, something truly extraordinary happens in the Sea of Cortez. Tens of thousands of mobula rays gather in massive schools known as “fevers,” their wings rippling through the water like a living storm. Sometimes, they leap from the sea in synchronised arcs. Sometimes, they glide just beneath the surface in swirling silver formations. And sometimes, if the timing is right, apex predators arrive! Orcas and other hunters charge through the schools, sending the rays scattering into hypnotic patterns across the ocean surface. It’s chaotic, beautiful, and almost psychedelic to witness... This is the Mobula Ray Migration in La Ventana, and it’s one of the most surreal wildlife spectacles on Earth. If you’re keen to check this truly amazing experience out, you’re in luck amigo! Broke Backpacker founder Will Hatton is leading expeditions to witness this incredible migration and has put together a truly splendid itinerary thanks to his two decades of being a logistics nerd. Each morning, the group heads out early with experienced local captains to search for the rays across the open waters of the Sea of Cortez. When conditions allow, you get to snorkel or freedive alongside the enormous schools, floating quietly as thousands of wings move beneath you. One moment, you may be surrounded by mobulas spiraling in feeding frenzies. Then dolphins appear, riding the swell beside the boat. Occasionally, the ocean delivers something truly unforgettable: Orcas… The adventure continues when you return to shore. Evenings in La Ventana are slow and soulful with home-cooked Mexican meals, bonfire hangs and world-class star-gazing 💫 If you're interested to know more about this trip, click the button below.
