Ahoy, friends! And Happy New Year :) Every January, we tend to promise ourselves that things will be different. This is usually an opportunity to think about what we want to change, what we want more of in our lives, and what we want to ditch (or at least try). I personally love a bit of reflection, as you may very well know, so I've been doing a lot of it over the past couple of weeks. A lot of it boils down to the desire of:
Ultimately, I think we all want more freedom. At least I do. I want freedom to be able to do the things I like, and to cherish what I consider to be of most value in life. I want time to spend with friends, family, my trusted four-legged companions, and to work on projects that fill my life with passion. But life always finds a way to get busy. I'm sure you can relate. Here’s the thing, though, friends, the folks amongst us who change our lives, who grow, who evolve - they aren’t necessarily the braver or luckier. They simply stop waiting for “someday” and make SOMETHING happen TODAY. So today is a fantastic day to break out your journal and make a plan for what you want to achieve this year. If you'd like some direction there, there is a fantastic post on the site to help you get started: As for myself, I’ve got some pretty big goals of my own for 2026, maybe some of these will get your creative juices flowing too… 1. Run another Hyrox race 2. Visit 3 new countries 3. Throw all my creative energy at my newest passion project… This year, I’ll still be sharing everything you love here at The Broke Backpacker - the budget tips, the routes, the hard-earned travel wisdom and humorous tales from the road... But I also wanted to invite you into the next chapter of my life, where you actually get to travel with me. It's called Elsewheria, and it's all about going somewhere properly. If part of you is craving something more than just a holiday… Then come out on an adventure with me :)
Whatever your goals are for 2026, I’m rooting for you and stoked to see where you end up ;) Here’s to a year of fewer excuses, deeper journeys, and choosing the road that gets you out of your comfort zone. See you out there. |

2025 has been one of the most amazing years, Reader. But it's been fast, real fast... time has shot on by as I've gallivanted all over, spending time in a dozen countries over 2025. I’ve bounced between Canada, England, Slovenia, America, Mexico, Croatia, Montenegro, Cyprus and several other places I can't quite remember. I hit up three weddings and several reunions in Europe, spoke at TBEX (a travel blogging conference) about how I made a few $$$$$$$ over the last few years, and perfected my...
Backpackers are humans too. And when this time of the year comes around, every human likes to be treated to something special... So we're going for a quick round of the ol' merry gift giving. This email is dedicated to the backpacker in your life, whether that's yourself, your mate, your mum, or even your cousin's best friend's pooch. 'Tis the time to feel special.'Tis the time to gift gifts. Last-minute gifts for backpackers 👀 I need to start by stating the obvious: if you're gonna buy...
I've always loved the idea of travelling for the sake of going to an event. The idea that something means so much to you that you'll plan an entire trip around it, just to make it happen... that's very special! And over the years, I've been lucky to be able to travel for gigs, festivals, and even sports competitions. As we approach 2026, there is a major event on traveller radars: the Winter Olympics. And it's happening soon. Where do you stay? How do you get around? And how can you stretch...
