Whales are a fascinating species. Every winter, hundreds of these gentle giants migrate over 10,000 miles to the peaceful lagoons of Guerrero Negro to give birth. For a few magical weeks, they actively seek out human interaction, a mystery that still puzzles scientists. Mothers even nudge their calves toward the boats, as if teaching them how to meet us. Some say it helps the whales shed parasites, others that they’re just bored and passing time before the long swim back to the Arctic. Either way, when a grey whale rises to meet your eyes; curious, calm, and leaning in for a gentle scratch, it’s an unforgettable experience. This happens just off the coast of northwest Mexico, in a beautiful region that goes by the name of Baja California. I was lucky enough to first visit Baja with my beloved Audy, who knows this mysterious land in and out (I also think she is secretly a whale whisperer, but more on that later). I was flabbergasted that I had never heard of this place before, but it quickly became one of my ALL TIME favourites. The landscape is stunning, the vibes are on point, and the marine wildlife is just out of this world. And coming back to the whale sightings... man... Grey whales do this thing called spyhopping, where they'll stand vertically and poke their heads out of the water, observing their surroundings. The most curious whales will lift their heads right beside you. Sometimes, they lean in close enough for what locals call a “whale kiss.” Can you imagine a 40-ton grey whale swim right up to your boat, look you in the eye… and invite you to touch it? If you plan your Baja trip right, this is 100% possible. We've got a handy guide on The Broke Backpacker with all the info you need to go whale watching in Baja. But I want to extend a very special invitation to you too... I will personally be leading a 7-day Baja adventure with Audy through Elsewheria, The Broke Backpacker's new tour company. We'll lead a group of lucky backpackers through unforgettable whale encounters, as well as snorkelling with playful sea lions, and watching dolphins dance across those turquoise waters ❤️ It's a very special trip we're organising for all you marine lovers!
