Dear Reader, My name is Prince William T. Hatton The Third, Count of Absurdistan, and I wish to inform you that a great fortune has been made available to me as of late, totalling US$27,000,000 (Twenty Seven Million United States Dollars). Because this sum was deposited in a private security vault in Delululand, I seek your trustworthy assistance in transferring this money into your foreign account for safekeeping and investment purposes. Scams! We all know them, and we all hate them. Although me and my buddy Aiden tend to forward them to eachother for the lolz. Scams are everywhere on the internet nowadays, but you know where they exist, too? In the real world, where real things happen. So, today, we're highlighting the most common travel scams and how to avoid them. This post is SO WORTH READING - benefit from our lessons (some coming at a price) and defend yourself upon the open road!
How to Avoid Getting Scammed 👍The best way to avoid these tricks is simply to be aware of them. As a backpacker, you might have your guard down for several reasons: you’re trying to enjoy yourself, befriend locals and believe in the goodness of all humans, search for unique adventures... You’re probably a little lost, too, and you might not know the language. Most cons work because you’re distracted, lost, or otherwise naive and (often AGAINST your intuition) make a conscious choice to TRUST. The thing is, pro scammers know what they're doing. But most of them are not violent, they're just potential thieves you need to deal with. Throughout my life, I have either fully or almost fallen for a number of these - and that's just how it is... Live a little, gain experience, and remember to trust your gut. If something feels fishy, then it probably is. Do NOT trust in the goodness of humans, don't get me wrong - HUMANS MOSTLY ARE GOOD - but scam artists prey on those who have too much faith in the goodness of humanity; it's like they can sense it. Click on the big red button below to get all our top tricks for how to stay sane, filled with love, and scam-free...
