The hardest thing I’ve ever done

Have you ever climbed a volcano, Reader?

This is something us Broke Backpackers like to do whilst travelling. Hiking up steaming craters, pushing our bodies and minds and topping everything off with an epic sunrise up the top.

Sometimes, though, these missions turn out to be much harder than initially planned, but they turn into epic stories nonetheless 😅

Taya took the challenge to tackle Indonesia's second-highest volcano, Mount Rinjani, climbing 3,726m through relentless elevation gain, steep rocky trails and some truly knee-destroying descents.

The first day already had her questioning her life choices, but then there was the 1:45am wake-up, the freezing temperatures and the final push to the summit... and that was only half the battle.

At one point, her body simply said fuck this and threw her into a little breakdown, but she put on her big girl pants and pushed through to the end.

Was the hike brutal? Absolutely. Would she do it again anytime soon? Absolutely not. But it was still one of the most surreal experiences she ever had, and she wrote a pretty damn entertaining piece about it!

Travel far. Spend less. Live more.

Not all Japanese cities are created equal. Kyoto and Osaka are only about 15 minutes apart by bullet train, but on the ground, they differ vastly. One is all ancient temples, quiet backstreets and what you'd expect from "traditional" Japan. The other is loud, chaotic, food-obsessed and absolutely not interested in going to bed early... I know which one I like the most 😏 but do you? Click to read ourKyoto vs Osaka Comparison Guide > Honestly, there's no universal answer. If you want culture,...

Quick version: we built a free tool called HostelWatch to help you find a place to sleep when your hostel pick is sold out. Tell it which hostel you want and which dates, and it emails you the moment a bed frees up. It only takes about 30 seconds. 🔔 Set an alert for free After more than a decade reviewing hostels, we've learned one thing: backpackers are flaky. They’ll plan, plan, plan, just to change everything last-minute. They change their mind, meet someone, or hear about a new,...
