Visiting Southeast Asia - Country by Country

Planning a trip around Southeast Asia, there's one mistake you really don't want to make: assuming the whole region has the same seasons.

Thailand might be enjoying glorious sunshine while Bali is getting drenched. Vietnam can have completely different weather in the north and south, and the Philippines has its own little quirks to contend with...

Getting your timing wrong can mean you end up having to rearrange plans, sweating through ridiculous heat whilst trying to sightsee, or paying peak-season prices for a trip that just doesn't hit quite right.

You don't necessarily need perfect weather to have an incredible time, but you do need to know where to go, when to go, and what to expect when you get there.

We've broken down the best time to visit Southeast Asia month by month, with country-by-country advice in our most recent article.

Thailand

  • Best months: November to February
  • Good shoulder months: October and early March
  • Best for: Beaches, temples, street food, backpacking, and island hopping.

Vietnam

  • Best months: Varies heavily by region, there's no generic best time to visit Vietnam

The first time I travelled to Southeast Asia, I spent a good chunk of the trip watching tropical downpours roll in, rearranging plans, and wondering why everyone seemed to have a different answer about the best time to visit.

Don't overthink the weather, but donโ€™t ignore it either. Find all the information you need for Southeast Asia, including planning notes and things to look out for in each country:

Sri Lanka is one hell of a mixed bag. On one hand, you've got rolling green mountains, epic train rides, ridiculously good curries, surf towns and some of the warmest hospitality you'll find on the road. On the other, that dream train journey can mean fighting for a seat, a short trip on the map can turn into hours on a bus, and the price of a โ€œcheapโ€ tuk-tuk ride can suddenly double when you're a tourist. Not every beach town is the paradise Instagram promised, either... So, is Sri Lanka...

Southeast Asia is a foodie's paradise. The region is packed with incredible food, but the best meals won't be found in restaurants. They'll be served from street carts, tiny roadside stalls and bustling markets. We've dropped an article full of wisdom from literally hundreds of street food meals, some places dodgier-looking than others... This isnโ€™t a list of the best dishes or the most Instagrammable bowls of noodles. You can find that anywhere. This is all the stuff those guides can't give...

Things like packing half our wardrobe for a two-week trip, trusting a guy who promised us a โ€œspecial priceโ€, or turning up at a border without properly checking the visa requirements... Today, we're running over some classics that are worth avoiding. 10 BACKPACKER MISTAKESYOU ONLY MAKE ONCE โ†’ 1. Packing Too Much An...
