Backpacking Europe the cheap way.

Most people travelling Europe cover the main highlights in the West and go straight back home.

Broke Backpackers do it differently. They go deeper, spend less and avoid the tourist hordes that clog up Amsterdam, Berlin, and the likes...

We have a differentiated route for backpacking Europe we'd like to introduce you to. We call it The Broke Backpacker Route.

The Broke Backpacker Route: Eastern/Southeast Europe

Eastern and Southeast Europe is where the real backpacking game is at. It's cheaper, rawer and infinitely more surprising.

We've got a sample itinerary below that is good for about 2 weeks, plus a few more stops you can include to extend up to 1 month.

Stop #1: Krakow (Poland)

One of Europe's most beautiful and most affordable cities. Soak in the old town, explore Wawel Castle and eat cheap pierogi until you can't move.

Stop #2: High Tatras (Slovakia)

The most underrated mountains in Europe: rugged, affordable and easy to reach. Hike to the lake, eat a massive meal for €6 and sleep in a mountain hut. The bus from Krakow is easy and cheap.

Stop #3: Budapest (Hungary)

Thermal baths, ruin bars, a stunning riverside setting and some of the best-value food and nightlife in all of Europe. A non-negotiable stop.

Stop #4: Belgrade (Serbia)

Creative, edgy and kinda intense (in the best way, ofc). Riverside bars, old fortresses, and huge food portions at tiny prices. The heart of former Yugoslavia and a fitting end to two weeks in Eastern Europe.

Got more time? The route keeps going south from Belgrade, through Skopje's wonderfully weird streets, Albania and Montenegro.

Travel far. Spend less. Live more.
