How Tom survived a year in Australia

If there is one thing that travellers know about Australia, besides koalas, kangaroos and giant spiders, is that it's bloody expensive. A dorm bed, a coffee, a couple of beers... these are all things that cost a small fortune and make you question your entire trip. And that's why a lot of people choose to go on a working holiday visa, something you might've heard about before. Pairing work with fun is one way to do things down under. That's exactly what happened to Tom. After six months travelling around Southeast Asia, he landed in Melbourne and watched his savings disappear at an alarming rate. So he did what any sensible backpacker would do...
Over the next 12 months, Tom worked seven completely different jobs. From hostels to vineyards, furniture removal, a gig at a pub 1,000km from Cairns, delivering gas canisters into the Australian outback, all the way to working on a huge farm where 100-hour weeks were normal. Some of it was brutal, but somewhere along the way, he realised the work was the trip. The jobs paid for the adventure, sure, but they also took him places most backpackers never see. The work introduced him to some unforgettable people, and turned Australia into something very different from your usual backpacking trip.
